As of August 2026, only 18 of 526 evaluable ChatGPT niches carry 5 or fewer competing advertisers, and those 18 are the clearest chatgpt ad opportunities we track. Across all 615 ad-carrying niches, the median has 14 advertisers and the most crowded has 952, so these 18 are genuine outliers.

Only 18 of the 526 evaluable ChatGPT niches have 5 or fewer competing advertisers. That is the entire wide-open surface, measured in August 2026.

The table shows the top 15 of the 18 wide-open niches we identified; the remaining 3 sit at 5 advertisers or fewer but rank outside the most-uncontested 15. The 15 visible here run between 8 and 16 ads each, with sauna installation the smallest at 8 ads against just 3 advertisers, and pet insurance the largest at 16 ads against 5. Seven of the 15 run on 4 advertisers or fewer, and the rest sit at exactly 5. None of them cross the 20-ad volume that marks the start of the contested middle of the ChatGPT ad market, which is why they remain genuinely open and unindexed by most media plans.

What counts as a wide-open ad opportunity

Three thresholds separate a greenfield opportunity from a saturated one. We start with 526 evaluable niches, those with at least 8 placements running, enough demand to judge whether buying works at all. Within that pool, 18 qualify as wide open with 5 or fewer competing advertisers. Another 82 bring the low-competition total to 100 once we extend the cap to 8 advertisers. Everything above 8 advertisers in an evaluable niche is a contested buy, by definition. The full set of ad-carrying niches is 615; the remaining 89 sit below the 8-ad threshold and are too small to evaluate. Demand, not supply, is what gates the wide-open list.

What the open niches share

Three patterns dominate the 18 wide-open niches. Local services with physical delivery account for most of them: sauna installation, custom home building, mobile pet vaccination, mobile notary, carpet cleaning. Niche insurance and protection products cluster around travel and pet owners. Aspirational consumer purchases fill the rest, from permanent jewelry to bullion to ski passes. Almost none are software, marketplaces, or generic retail, the categories that dominate the top of the ChatGPT ad leaderboard. The unifying trait is high-consideration purchases where a buyer is willing to name a provider rather than scroll a list. All 15 visible open niches sit between 8 and 16 placements, the floor of what counts as an evaluable market, which suggests buying intent is converting but volume is still thin.

Where the ad volume actually lives

Of 526 evaluable ChatGPT niches, only 18 are wide open

  • Low competition (6 to 8 advertisers)16%
  • Wide open (5 or fewer advertisers)3%
Evaluable niches are those with 8 or more ads. Of those, 18 have 5 or fewer advertisers, and another 82 bring the low-competition total to 100.

Enterprise & Fintech alone ran 2,802 placements in August 2026, against the 172 carried by the 15 visible wide-open niches combined. SaaS & Productivity added 2,610 placements against 947 advertisers, and Real Estate ran 1,597 against 732. Greenfield is not where the dollars are; it is where the marginal cost of entry is lowest. A brand entering sauna installation or custom home building can plausibly own share-of-voice on day one, the kind of positioning that takes years and outsized budgets to replicate in SaaS or real estate. The 426 contested niches in the eligible pool, those with 9 or more advertisers, tell the opposite story: established demand, crowded share, and budgets measured in millions rather than thousands.

The 172 placements running across the 15 visible wide-open niches are not a rounding error against Enterprise's 2,802; they are a different kind of market. Each placement costs a fraction of what it would in Enterprise & Fintech, and each one likely converts a buyer who already typed a provider-shaped prompt into ChatGPT. That is why wide-open inventory has value beyond its volume: a small placement count on a high-intent prompt is more efficient than a large placement count on a generic comparison query.

Wide-open inventory is small precisely because demand is small; treat the list as a competitive map, not a media plan.
