ChatGPT ads glossary

A plain-language reference for the buying, creative, targeting, measurement, and research terms used around ChatGPT advertising.

A

Ad
The creative unit shown in ChatGPT, including the advertiser identity, title, description, landing page, and image.
Ad group
A set of ads organized around a theme or intent area within a campaign. Context hints are configured at this level in OpenAI Ads Manager.
Ad library
A searchable research collection of observed ads. This independent library records creatives, advertisers, niches, and associated prompts.
Ad placement
One observed instance of an ad appearing in an eligible ChatGPT conversation. One creative can have multiple placements.
Advertiser
The business or organization identified on the sponsored card.
Average CPC
Average cost per click, calculated as click-based spend divided by clicks.
Average CPM
Average cost per thousand impressions, calculated from impression-based spend.

C

Campaign
The top-level Ads Manager object defining objective, budget, dates, and geographic targeting.
Context hint
A phrase an advertiser supplies to describe conversation types relevant to an ad group. It guides contextual matching but is not an exact-match keyword.
Contextual targeting
Matching an ad to the topic and intent of the current conversation rather than inserting it into ChatGPT's generated answer.
Conversion
A desired post-click action measured through OpenAI's supported conversion-measurement setup.
CPC
Cost per click, a pricing or bidding model tied to clicks.
CPM
Cost per mille, a pricing or bidding model expressed per one thousand impressions.
Creative
The user-facing combination of title, description, image, advertiser identity, and destination.
CTR
Click-through rate, the percentage of impressions that produce a click.

I

Impression
A recorded display of an ad. An impression is not the same as a unique creative or unique user.

L

Landing page
The advertiser destination opened from the sponsored card. OpenAI requires it to be relevant, valid, reachable, and consistent with the creative.

N

Niche
This library's topical classification for grouping observed placements, such as cloud development, travel, or healthcare.

O

Organic mention
A brand or product named naturally in ChatGPT's generated answer without a paid Sponsored label. It is not a sponsored placement.

S

Share of voice
An observational measure of how much captured visibility an advertiser holds within a defined prompt sample, niche, and time window.
Sponsored answer
A common search phrase, but not the preferred product definition. OpenAI says the sponsored card is separate from the generated answer.
Sponsored card
A clearly labeled paid placement displayed separately below a relevant ChatGPT response.

T

Trigger prompt
A prompt associated with an observed ad placement in this library. It describes the captured context and does not prove a deterministic targeting rule.

Observation versus platform fact

OpenAI's official documentation defines the advertising product. This library's terms for captures, niches, and trigger prompts describe our research dataset and should not be read as OpenAI's internal taxonomy.

FAQ

ChatGPT advertising terms, answered

The questions people actually ask.

01

What is a context hint in ChatGPT ads?

A context hint is an advertiser-supplied phrase describing relevant conversation types for an ad group. OpenAI says it is broader than an exact-match keyword and helps the system understand where an ad may be relevant.

02

What is a trigger prompt?

In this library, a trigger prompt is the prompt associated with a captured placement. It is observational evidence, not proof that the same prompt will always produce that ad.

03

What is the difference between an ad and a placement?

An ad is the creative unit. A placement is one observed appearance of that ad. One creative can appear in multiple conversations and produce multiple captured placements.

04

Are sponsored answers part of ChatGPT's answer?

No. Sponsored answer is a searched phrase, but OpenAI describes ads as clearly labeled sponsored cards shown separately from the generated response.

05

What does share of voice mean in this library?

Share of voice is an observational percentage within a defined captured sample. It is not OpenAI's total market share and depends on the prompts, niches, source, and time window measured.
