Policy explainer

ChatGPT ads policy, explained

OpenAI reviews the advertiser, ad copy, image, targeting, and destination. Approval is specific to the submitted setup, not a blanket endorsement of a brand or industry.

Reviewed July 20, 2026. Always use the official OpenAI Ads Policies as the controlling source.

Five checks determine whether an ad can run

Advertiser

The business, identity, country, and underlying offer must be eligible.

Creative

Titles, copy, images, and claims must be accurate, clear, and non-deceptive.

Targeting

Audience and contextual targeting cannot exploit sensitive traits or discriminate.

Destination

The landing page must be reachable, relevant, safe, and consistent with the ad.

Local law

Regional regulations, licenses, disclosures, and age rules still apply.

Allowed, restricted, and prohibited are not interchangeable

Generally eligible

Ordinary lawful consumer and business products can apply when the advertiser, messaging, targeting, and destination comply.

Restricted or regulated

Some health, financial, alcohol, dating, or other regulated offers may require location-specific licensing, disclosures, age controls, and additional review. Eligibility depends on the exact offer.

Prohibited

OpenAI prohibits illegal or dangerous goods, weapons, tobacco and recreational drugs, adult sexual content, political campaigning, gambling, deceptive schemes, academic cheating, and other categories listed in the current policy.

Brands captured in policy-sensitive verticals

The following names come from this library's niche taxonomy. They are examples of observed placements only. A capture does not prove current approval, establish a legal category, or show that every product from that advertiser is eligible.

Account approval does not guarantee creative approval

OpenAI can separately review and reject an account, campaign, ad, image, claim, or landing page. Changes to a destination or serving conditions can also create later compliance issues. Preserve documentation for licenses and claims, and review every variant before submission.

FAQ

ChatGPT ads policy, answered

The questions people actually ask.

01

What ads are allowed on ChatGPT?

OpenAI permits ads for lawful products and services that comply with its advertiser, creative, targeting, landing-page, and regional requirements. Every advertiser and ad remains subject to review.

02

What categories are prohibited in ChatGPT ads?

OpenAI's current policy prohibits categories including illegal goods, weapons, tobacco and recreational drugs, adult content, political campaigning, gambling, certain financial products, academic cheating, and other harmful or deceptive offers. The official policy is the controlling source.

03

Are health and financial ads allowed?

Some regulated categories may be allowed only in supported regions and with appropriate licensing, disclosures, targeting, and review. Other subcategories are prohibited. Advertisers should assess the exact product and destination against OpenAI's current policy.

04

Does an advertiser in this library prove OpenAI approved its whole category?

No. A capture shows that a placement was observed at a point in time. It does not establish the advertiser's current account status, the policy classification of every product it offers, or ongoing approval for a category.

05

Can advertisers use sensitive personal data for targeting?

OpenAI's policy prohibits targeting based on sensitive personal data and restricts discriminatory or exploitative practices. OpenAI separately describes privacy controls for ad personalization.

06

Can a ChatGPT ad be rejected after account approval?

Yes. Account verification and creative review are separate. An ad, image, claim, or landing page can be rejected or stop serving if it violates policy or becomes inaccessible or inconsistent.
